Willard Says…

A Bibliography—Writings about DREDGE Operation

Information about hydraulic dredging is pretty sparse, especially for those who are engaged in sand and gravel mining. The following publications are mostly about contract dredge operation—the big boys in the hydraulic dredging world. While most of the information presented is about eighteen to forty-eight inch contractor-type dredges the hydraulic principles involved in moving a slurry through pump and pipelines also applies to eight to sixteen inch sand & gravel mining dredges. There are significant differences in operating procedures and components between contract dredging and sand & gravel dredging.

For these reasons I offer Willardsays.com as a practical source of information tailored specifically for those engaged in sand & gravel dredge mining.

I have provided comments about each publication.

Handbook of Dredging Engineering

By John B. Herbich
Reference ISBN 0-07-028360-5

Mr. Herbich headed up the College of Dredging at Texas A & M, College Station, Texas, a sea-grant college and is now professor emeritus. During his tenure this college amassed a tremendous amount of research information on all aspects of dredging. Those studies continue today and they conduct a yearly dredging seminar.

Fundamentals of Hydraulic Dredging

By Thomas M. Turner
https://ascelibrary.org/doi/book/10.1061/9780784401477

Mr. Turner passed away some years ago. He had a long first-hand experience in dredge manufacture as well as operations. I found much information in his writings

Hydraulic Dredging, Theoretical And Applied

1970 by John Huston, C.E.

Hydraulic Dredging, Principals, Equipment, Procedures, Methods

1986 by John Huston, C.E.

Mr. Huston’s books were most useful to me because he delved more deeply into the hows and why’s of the mathematics that necessarily must be part of an analysis of dredge system function.

Dredging Handbook for Engineers – Second Edition

By R.N. Bray, A.D. Bates, J. M. Land
ISBN-13: 978-0340545249

The Dynamics of Dredging

2001 By Mort Richardson
ISBN-13: 978-0966541311

A little dredging history and interesting accounts of large projects all over the world.

International Dredging Review – magazine

319 N. 4th St., Suite 650
St. Louis, MO 63102
Phone: 314-241-7354
waterwaysjournal.net

Once a stand alone publication, now a part of The Waterways Journal.

World Dredging Mining & Construction – magazine

PO Box 17479
Irvine, CA 92623 – 7479
Phone: 714-451-2228
worlddredging.com

The content of both magazines deals mostly with contract dredging with an occasional article on sand & gravel mining. Be warned that the articles may lack objectivity since they are mostly written by those who suffer pride of ownership.
